“Witchlings: The Golden Frog Games” Claribel A. Ortega

Rated 5 stars ***** “Witchlings #2. Scholastic Press (Scholastic). 373 p. 2023.

Despite their heroics in book one, Seven, Thorn, and Valley are still disliked by many witches because they are Spares. Seven is training to become the town’s next Uncle, who has always had the power to speak to animals. However, the only animals she hears clearly are monstruos/monsters. Many years ago a witch was sentenced to death for having the same power, so Seven refuses to let anyone know she hears them for fear she’ll meet the same fate.

Meanwhile the Golden Frog games have begun, where skilled witches from nearby towns form teams and compete in different events over several days. With Thorn chosen as their town’s Costura/Sewing champion, the Spares have a chance to win a first-ever title. Unfortunately, with many witches not happy with the idea of Spares leading them in anything it doesn’t take long before mysterious forces release dark magic into crowded stadiums with the intent of killing Thorn. As more and more of their friends fall victim to these spells, our Spares have their hands full trying to find the culprits, protect each other, and win the contest. Unfortunately not all their wishes come true.

In my opinion, this second book in the series is SO MUCH better than the first! With more action, adventure, and mystery, I was much more invested. The ending was extremely open ended. Luckily, I received an ARC for part 3 and REALLY hope there isn’t a part 4 because I don’t have it!

Highly recommended for ages 12-16.
