“Here lies a vengeful bitch” Codie Crowley

Rated 5 stars ***** ARC. ebook. Hyperion (Buena Vista Books, Inc.) [Disney.] To be published August 6, 2024.

According to her pill-popping mother, and everyone at school, Annabel was a bad girl. The only person to whom Annie felt grounded is her best friend Maura, as they’d been friends forever, but they hit a bad patch when Annie went back to her cheating boyfriend.

Early one morning, Annie found herself in the middle of a freezing river on Resurrection Peak with no memory of how she’d gotten there. Though everyone in her small town knew to avoid the area, with its stories of hauntings, she was taken in by a group of teenagers. They offered her shelter, warmth, and food in one of its crumbling homes.

Though her memory was sporadic, in time Annie realized she’d been murdered and dumped in the river. Once the truth sunk in her anger flared. She was going to find her lying boyfriend and his miserable friends who she’d been with on her last night alive, figure out who killed her, and make him pay. With the help of Sam, a handsome teenager who died over 60 years ago, Annie sets out to avenge her death. She must work through lies before the truth finally stares her in the face. Only then will Annie realize that being dead has its advantages.

This book was so creepily thrilling I couldn’t put it down. Crowley was excellent at building suspense, while Annie’s many and varied emotions came across loudly and clearly. Be sure to read it with the lights on…
