“Betraying Season” Marissa Doyle

Leland Sisters series Book 2.” Henry Holt and Company, 2009. Hardcover. 330 pp.

With Persy married, Penelope moves to Ireland to be tutored in magic by Persy’s father in law, Mr. Carrighar. Ally and Michael are expecting their first child, and Mr. Carrighar is trying to figure out cures for Ally’s morning sickness, so Pen feels left out and lonely. She has a chance meeting with Lady Keating who introduces Niall, her dashing son. Soon Pen and Niall are inseparable, and Pen feels her dreams of love and marriage will soon be fulfilled.

What Pen doesn’t know is Lady Keating has planned to join Niall with the Duke father who has never acknowledged him as son, but can only do it by using Pen’s magic so has convinced Niall to woo Pen into submission. What Niall doesn’t know is that Lady Keating really wants to murder Queen Victoria to put his father on the throne. What Pen doesn’t know is that Niall fell in love with her for real. What none of them know is the old saying “the best laid plans of mice and men…” So, between all the different sneaky plots going on that no one seems to know are going on, it’s a wonder readers aren’t as confused as Pen who comes across as immature and thoughtless throughout the entire book.

Despite all the love/hate complexities, and Pen’s childish behavior, “Betraying Season” did have some bright spots through the humorous Corkwobble, a clurichaun, similar to a leprechaun. Interactions with him always made me laugh. I only read this series because of the ARC for part 3 I received at ALA. I can only hope it will be a much better read.

I’ll leave it up to you as to whether or not you will want to read “Betraying Season.”
